“People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.”
– Paulo Coelho from The Alchemist

Although we devote much of our time and energy to helping students find the colleges that are the best academic, social and financial fits for them, we know that it’s not always possible to find the perfect match the first time around. Whether students are seeking transfer from a two-year to four-year institution, are interested in exploring a new major not offered at their current school, or are simply unhappy with their college experience, we help students work through the transfer process from initial exploration to final application submission.

To begin, we work with students to identify the reasons that they are currently dissatisfied. We are interested in learning more about what their expectations were, and why they are not currently being met. Most importantly, we need to explore whether or not transferring institutions would solve the problems, or if there are other changes the students themselves would have to make first in order to find more success in the future.

Once we have determined that transferring would be in the students’ favor, we create a list of possible institutions based on admissions factors (GPA, acceptance rates, etc.), geographic preferences, fields of study, extracurricular opportunities, and financial needs. After discussing the options with students and narrowing the selection, we create shared documents to organize admissions requirements and timeliness. Over the following weeks, we help students stay on track with gathering recommendations, creating application accounts, writing essays, compiling portfolios if necessary and exploring financial aid. When students receive decisions, we review offers and debrief with the students and their families to consider the best possible option. We also then help students navigate the process of determining which credits will transfer.

Based on our work with past transfer students, we know that the idea of “starting over” can be both overwhelming and intimidating. Students considering transfer are faced with the unique challenge of facing the application process while also remaining focused on coursework at their current institutions. We are sensitive to the heightened difficult of the transfer application process, and therefore help students manage not only their application requirements but also their stress and uncertainty. Much of our work with transfer students is completed remotely, but we are committed to ensuring that our communication provides students with the comfort of knowing they are constantly supported.
